Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Council announced this. Kapil Dev said that the head coach was selected keeping in mind the standards of coaching skills, experience, knowledge and communication with the team.
Kapil Dev announced Ravi Shastri’s name after the Cricket Advisory Committee meeting.
Kapil said that captain Virat Kohli’s opinion was not taken while selecting the head coach of the team.
Coaches have been selected on standards such as coaching skills, experience, knowledge and communication with the team.
New Zealand’s Mike Hewson was second and Tom Moody of Australia were the third contenders. But the name of Ravi Shastri was agreed. Ravi Shastri, 57, was the team director in 2014-2016, becoming the head coach in 2017.
India Cricket team Coach name Ravi Shastri, served as the director of the team from 2014-2016. In 2017, he was made the coach of the team. However, questions were being raised over his coach’s position after the defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the World Cup semi-finals. Even before selection, it was being said that Shastri’s tenure could be extended further, as he is also the choice of Virat Kohli. However, Kapil Dev made it clear that Kohli’s advice was not sought during the selection of the coach(India Cricket team Coach) . There was not much difference in the marks obtained by the three candidates.
Kapil Dev said, “Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaikwad and former captain of the women’s cricket team Shantha Rangaswamy had their respective markings for the head coach candidates. According to the consensus of all of us, the marking was such that Australia’s Tom Moody was third, New Zealand’s Mike Hewson was second and Ravi Shastri was first. Accordingly, we decided. We scored on standards such as coaching skills, experience, knowledge and communication with the team. However, there was not much difference in the marks obtained by all the three candidates. All three gave a good presentation. “
Anshuman Gaekwad said, “I think he is the current coach, so his side was strong.” They know the players, know the current environment and what are the problems, they also know. If he chooses anyone else, he would have to start things long back.
Ravi Shastri visits West Indies, gives interview through video conferencing
Apart from Kapil Dev, the CAC includes former India India opener Anshuman Gaekwad and former women’s cricket team captain Shanta Rangaswamy.
The CAC shortlisted 6 candidates for the interview. These included Lal Chand Rajput, Robin Singh, former New Zealand coach Mike Hewson and Australian all-rounder Tom Moody besides Shastri. Shastri, who is on the West Indies tour, gave an interview through video conferencing. Similarly, Moody gave an interview on Skype. Lalchand, Robin and Hessen arrive at the CAC in Mumbai. Former West Indian all-rounder Phil Simmons withdrew his name.
Kapil Dev said “Mile Hessen was the second and Tom Moody’s third choice as coach. But, the committee selected Ravi Shastri.”
2000 people applied for coaches and coaching staff. The tenure of Ravi Shastri and the current coaching staff ended after the World Cup, but the board extended his contract for 45 days. The board had invited applications for coaches and coaching staff by 30 July. Around 2000 people applied. Out of these 6 people were short-listed.
